前几天在图书馆的书架上偶然看到一本新到的图书[font=Arial]Catalysis for Renewables: From Feedstocks to Energy Production,Wiley-VCH出版社2007年出版,编者是G. Centi和R.A. van Santen,作者是一些欧洲著名的催化专家.读了其中一章,感到非常畅快,进而把几乎整本书读完.

本书的内容讲的是生物质的转化.大体意思是:生物质,比如说大豆,稻草,树干,粮食,广泛存在于自然界中.以前人们依赖煤炭和石油作为能源,但是这些是不可再生能源,总有一天会用完,再说这些的燃烧产生大量二氧化碳.因此,人们在想办法把生物质转化为能源和化学品.但是,煤炭工业和石油工业已经有100多年历史了,很多现有的流程和工艺,很多反应器都是已经反复优化好的.因此,很难把生物质直接丢到石油化工的反应器里面直接产生能源.而且,以现有的条件,生物质转化的成本还太高,消费者不会花更高的价钱买更差的产品.但是,从长远看,生物质的转化一定会流行于人类社会.比如,在巴西,很多汽车用的燃料是生物乙醇和汽油的混合物,甚至还用生物乙醇直接作为燃料.

生物质,特别是木头,是固体,因此它们的利用需要进行转化.有几种途径:(1)在高温气化成一氧化碳和氢气.这两种物质可以通过催化反应,生成甲醇(甲醇化)或者碳氢化合物(F-T合成);(2)在高温无氧条件下,或者在高温无氧但有水气条件下,生成液体生物油;(3)从生物质中提取出来的甘油脂通过交换酯化,产生甘油和生物柴油;(4)纤维素水解产生葡萄糖,葡萄糖发酵产生生物乙醇; 葡萄糖,果糖和木糖还可以转化为其它有用的物质;(5)从生物质,如木头和其它植物里面还可以提取出精细化学品,香料,和合成化学的高级原料.

这是一本写的非常好的书!强烈推荐!在我看过所有的催化书籍当中,这本书应该是前面10%的.很多专业书籍的缺点就是每一章的作者把他们以前发表的科研论文拷贝粘贴,再发表一遍,使读者感到花了冤枉钱.其它书还有的缺点就是每一章的深度和风格都是不一样的.而目前这本[font=Arial]Catalysis for Renewables: From Feedstocks to Energy Production虽然有十几组作者写的十几章,但是深度和写法比较统一,也基本没有重复.这本书和发表在Topics in Catalysis上一般综述的区别在于Topics in Catalysis上的文章更加具有专业性,从头到尾可以看到很多分子式,很多催化剂的名称,很多具体的活性数据;而这本书更适合不从事这一个课题研究的化学或者化工研究者.书里面除了催化以外,还有很多社会学的,政治的,经济的,生态学的,汽车发动机的思维在里面.更加具有大众意义.从中可以领会到写书章和写Topics in Catalysis综述的区别.

这本书适合学催化,有机化学,精细化工,能源化工,绿色化学,生物工程的人看,这本书的部分章节可以当大学应用化学专题的资料.看了这本书,我作为一个化学工作者感到被这本书激发起来了,感到化学对人类社会的可持续发展非常有用.同时,看这本书之前我对生物质一点也不懂的;看了之后感到能够读懂了,豁然开朗.

类似的报道曾经有过,如果真正能产业化,前途不可限量,特别是在当今资源竞争激烈的社会。不知道那个图片的帅哥是谁啊,呵呵

目前最有效的CO2转化途径当推生物的光合作用,但是生物质一般是非常稳定的化学物,如果其利用尚必须借助高温这样的高能耗过程,我想其前景也不那么光明。化石能源的枯竭是目前面临的重大难题,生物质的利用一定要借助光能(几乎是不会枯竭的)或者其他低品味的能源如地热,才真正有实用价值。

Gabriele Centi is full professor of industrial chemistry at the University of Messina and a Past President of the European Federation of Catalysis Societies and Coordinator of the Network of Excellence IDECAT. He co-directs the European Laboratory for Catalysis and Surface Science. His research activities are centered in the area of development of industrial heterogeneous catalysts for applications in the field of sustainable chemical processes, and environmental protection and clean energy. He is author of over 230 scientific papers in international journals, editor and/or author of 6 books, editors of 6 special issues of international journals, chairman of several International congresses, and editor of the Elsevier book series "Studies in Catalysis and Surface Science". He also serves as member of panel committees of evaluation of various international institutes, and was visiting professor at various European Universities. He is a member of the Core Team which elaborates the European Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry.

Rutger Anthony van Santen gained his doctorate in theoretical chemistry in 1971, from the University of Leiden, joining Shell, Amsterdam as a research chemist the following year. In 1988 he became Professor of Catalysis at the Eindhoven University of Technology where he was promoted to scientific director in 1989. In 1991 he became director of the Netherlands Institute of Research in Catalysis, and in 2005 he was made Royal Netherlands Academy of Science and Arts Professor. He is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dutch Academy of Engineering and is a Knight in the order of the Dutch Lion. Professor van Santen has been active in many national and international catalysis research programs and organizations. He is the author or editor of 11 books, over 600 research papers and 16 patents, and has been awarded several national and international awards and visiting professorships. His main research interest is the molecular mechanistic understanding of catalytic reactions.
