Inorganic Chemistry I in University of Waterloo

Instructor: Dr. Carey Bissonnette

Detailed description:
The material presented in lectures is collected from a variety of sources. It is important that you attend the lectures so that
you know what topics are emphasized. We will cover atomic structure (see topics 4 and 5 below) in more detail than is found
in the text. This will help us develop a good understanding of atomic orbitals so that we can begin to explain bonding,
molecular structure, and chemical reactivity in terms of orbital overlaps and/or orbital interactions.
1. review of molecular geometry: Lewis structures; VSEPR theory; bond dipoles and molecular dipole moments
2. molecular symmetry: symmetry operations and symmetry elements; point groups; character tables; practical applications
3. Ionic bonding and ionic compounds: crystal lattices based on closest-packed structures; trigonal, tetrahedral, octahedral
and cubic interstitial sites; radius ratio rules; lattice energy and the Born-Haber cycle; Madelung constant
4. overview of quantum theory: the Schrodinger wave equation, particle-in-a-box, quantum theory of the hydrogen atom,
atomic orbitals, radial distribution functions, boundary surfaces, nodal planes and surfaces, orbital and spin angular
momentum
5. atomic structure and properties: multielectron atoms and electron configurations, penetration and shielding, effective
nuclear charge, Slater’s rules; ionization energies and electron affinities, electronegativity scales, valence orbital
ionization energy, atomic term symbols
6. valence bond theory for diatomic and polyatomic molecules
7. molecular orbital theory for diatomic molecules, simple polyatomic molecules; applications of molecular orbital theory
to chemical reactions
