Computational Chemist - Singapore - Codexis
Codexis is a leading developer of biocatalytic chemical processes thatcan dramatically reduce manufacturing costs across a broad range of
industries. Our proprietary technology enables novel solutions for
cost-effective, efficient and environmentally sound production of
pharmaceuticals, transportation fuels, and industrial chemicals. Our
focus is on improving R&D productivity for our partners while
significantly reducing their capital expenditures and cost-of-goods
using green chemistry CloseGreen Chemistry methods.
Design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the
use and generation of hazardous substances.
DESCRIPTION:
As a computational chemist, you will determine a suitable enzyme as the
starting point based on the understanding of the desired reaction
target, the enzymes catalytic mechanism and the origins of selectivity.
You will then design mutation libraries that guide the rational
evolution of the enzyme for catalyzing the formation of the preferred
product. You will interact with the molecular biology group who will
synthesis the libraries, and the analytical biochemistry group who will
test the activities of the variants under miniaturized process
conditions. Using the information provided by these groups as well as
issues with the biocatalyst at scale-up determined by the chemistry
group, you will design the next round of libraries.
Ideally the candidate will have used computational experience to
elucidate the enzyme mechanism using crystal structures. Possible
relevant research experience would include computational enzyme design,
applying computational methods (e.g. docking, homology modeling,
conformational analysis, molecular dynamics, QM/MM) to the prediction of
enzyme structures, binding, catalysis, and selectivity. This candidate
should have a strong understanding of bioinformatics, enzymology,
protein engineering, and directed evolution. Knowledge about molecular
biology would be beneficial.
You will be expected to be familiar with molecular modeling software
(MOE, Accelrys, SYBYL, etc.), bioinformatics software, and online
databases (BLAST, BRENDA, RCSB PDB, ExPASy, etc.). Expertise in
scientific programming and scripting is a plus.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Ph.D. or work experience equivalent in Computational Chemistry or
related field. Experience in the biotech industry is a plus, as is an
understanding of LIMS systems.
A proven intellectual ability and an outstanding scientific track record
in the candidates field of expertise.
Proven expertise in computational enzyme design and the understanding of
enzyme binding, catalysis, and selectivity.
Active recent experience in computational tools for macro and small
molecule modeling and a quick learner of computational software.
Knowledge of scripting languages is a plus.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
Strong problem solving skills and the ability to work on multiple
projects in a fast-paced and goal-oriented team environment.
