[Nature Materials - review paper]: Patterning surfaces with functional polymers
Zhihong Nie1 & Eugenia Kumacheva1,2,3AbstractThe ability to pattern functional polymers at different length scales is important for research fields including cell biology, tissue engineering and medicinal science and the development of optics and electronics. The interest and capabilities of polymer patterning have originated from the abundance of functionalities of polymers and a wide range of applications of the patterns. This paper reviews recent advances in top-down and bottom-up patterning of polymers using photolithography, printing techniques, self-assembly of block copolymers and instability-induced patterning. Finally, challenges and future directions are discussed from the point of view of both applicability and strategies for the surface patterning of polymers.

The scope of the review, patterning surfaces with polymers, is so broad that it is impossible to provide sufficient detail about the topics that are included, and it is also impossible to include all of the important topics that would fall in this category. This is perhaps the strength and weakness of the review;
这是另外一个referee's comment: This is a very interesting review on different approaches to patterned polymer films. The topic is extremely challenging to review, since (patterned) thin polymer films comprise such a vast array of applications as well as a broad range of scientific disciplines (ranging from polymer chemistry to device engineering). The authors can be congratulated in condensing such a daunting task into an easily readable review, highlighting many breakthrough advances from recent year and explaining in simple terms the science behind these breakthroughs. The topics and illustrations are very well-chosen and I think the review will be welcome as an introduction to many researchers into this field.
