Date: Fri Apr 25 10:11:31 2008
Subject: 08.04.25 PhD and Postdoc Positions, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany

The University of Karlsruhe (TH) and the Research Centre Karlsruhe have recently merged into the
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and are jointly planning their future research strategies.

In the quantum chemistry group at the University of Karlsruhe (TH)

PhD student (50% BAT IIa/E13) and post-doctoral positions (100% BAT IIa/E13)

are available for computational chemists/physicists in different areas:

Application of ab initio electronic structure methods to novel inorganic clusters and lanthanoid
as well as transition metal compounds in their ground and excited states, in close collaboration
with leading experimental groups in the KIT.

Application of ab initio electronic structure methods to carbon-based compounds at the
molecular (chemical vapor deposition of carbon from light hydrocarbons) as well as at the
nanoscale (nanotubes, fullerenes).  Study of reaction mechanisms and application of transition
state theory, in close collaboration with leading experimental groups in the KIT.

Further development of highly accurate ab initio electronic structure methods using Slater-type
geminals, in particular the development of methods for analytic calculations of energy
derivatives, of relaxed coupled-cluster density matrices, and the developent of atomic natural
orbitals for methods using Slater-type geminals.

The ideal candidate for the PhD position will have completed his/her Masters in Quantum
Chemistry, Theoretical Solid State Physics, or a related field.

The ideal candidate for the post-doctoral position is expected to have a PhD in Theoretical
Chemistry or Physics, experience in non-routine applications of quantum chemistry and/or
simulation codes to complex systems, and experience in programming.

KIT offers an excellent co-operation environment (Center of Functional Nanostructures,
http://www.cfn.uni-karlsruhe.de; Institute of Nanotechnology, http://www.fzk.de/int) and
excellent computing resources.  With about 7500 employees and an annual budget of more
than half a billion Euros, KIT has the potential of becoming a leading institution in selected
science disciplines in the world (http://www.kit.edu).  In the Excellence Initiative, the
University of Karlsruhe (TH) was elected one of the first three elite universities in Germany
in October 2006.

The positions are available immediately, but start date is flexible.

To apply, please send a CV, and arrange for at least two letters of
recommendation to be sent to: Willem.Klopper-$-kit.edu
