Absorption spectra, compns., and stability consts. were detd. for peroxymolybdates formed in aq. solns. (HCl, H2SO4) of different acidities. Complexes contg. only 1 O22- group also contain the acid anion (Mo(O2)(OH)2Cl2). Complexes with 2 O22- groups contain no acid anions and absorb at 30,000 cm-1 (.epsilon. = 1200) independent of the type of medium. The 1st type complex has .epsilon. = 350-500 and absorbs 24,600-30,000 cm-1 depending on the type of medium, with formation const. K1 = (8 .times. 102)-((4-5) .times. 103) M-1. The 2nd complex has K2 = 1700 M-1 (decreasing to 3.5 M-1 on increasing HCl or Cl- due to the equil. Mo(O2)(OH)2Cl2 + H2O2 .dblharw. Mo(O2)2(OH)2 + 2HCl with thermodn. equil. const. (2.5 .+-. 0.5) .times. 108 M3).
