ISBN expands to 13 digits in 2007
In January 2007, the ISBN Agency will begin issuing 13-digit ISBNs (International Standard Book Numbers). This is a global change from the 10-digit ISBN put forward by the International Standards Organization (ISO) that has been used by the publishing industry worldwide for decades for non-serialized publications.
In accordance, previously published works will retain their 10-digit ISBNs, however an ISBN-13 will be generated based on a conversion formula to ensure universal ISBN-13 compliance. Newly published works will use 13-digit ISBNs exclusively.
