Course Summary and Objectives
CHEM516 is an introductory level medicinal chemistry course designed for
chemistry and biochemistry postgraduates. The complete course will acquaint
students with concepts and methodologies in the drug development process
before in vivo studies. Topics:
• Molecular design of life; DNA replication, transcription, and
translation; ribozymes; Nucleic acids, interference at the DNA
and RNA levels.
• Protein structures and properties; Enzyme catalysis and its
mechanism, kinetics, and inhibition and inactivation
• Protein-protein interaction and its disruption
• Prodrugs and drug metabolism
• Drug-like molecules
• Design of drug screening assays and drug development strategy
• Combinatorial chemistry and HTS for lead discovery
• Lead optimization.
